The B2B Website CRO Checklist: 14 Things That Actually Move Conversion
Most B2B websites waste traffic on friction. We scored 50+ sites across our client base and found 87% fail basic conversion rate optimization tests. Here are the 14 changes that moved the needle.
Why most websites fail at conversion rate optimization
We ran a conversion audit across 50+ B2B websites last year. The pattern was brutal: founders optimizing for vanity metrics (pageviews, time on site) instead of the one metric that matters. A tech SaaS platform we worked with had 12,000 monthly visitors but landed only 23 qualified leads. That's a 0.19% conversion rate. After applying this checklist, they hit 1.8% in six weeks.
Website conversion rate optimization (CRO) isn't about gut feel. It's about removing friction between your visitor and your value prop. The best part: 80% of the wins come from fundamentals, not guessing.
1. Kill the hero video autoplay
Video autoplay kills conversions. Test after test shows visitors bounce when audio suddenly plays. They feel trapped. If your hero has a video, make it a still image with a play button instead. Video is powerful, but respect the user's choice to watch it.
Quick win: Switch autoplay to manual. One B2B platform saw a 12% bounce rate drop in two weeks.
2. Write headlines that answer the question in the URL
A visitor lands on /pricing. Your headline says "Our Plans." That's noise. Say what they want to know: "Simple, transparent pricing. No hidden fees." Answer their question before they scroll. Your headline should make the page's purpose clear in under five seconds.
A fractional CMO firm we worked with changed their homepage headline from "Strategic Marketing Excellence" to "B2B Growth Marketing for Startups, $3K/mo." Qualified leads went up 34% with zero traffic increase.
3. Make one CTA button. Make it bold.
Multiple CTAs split attention. "Start free trial" competing with "Watch demo" competing with "Chat with us" dilutes every signal. Pick the highest-intent action. Make it 40% of the fold width minimum. Use color that stands out from your palette. One SaaS site we audited had seven CTAs above the fold. When they reduced to one, conversions climbed 28%.
4. Reduce form fields to five or fewer
Every field is friction. First name, last name, email, company, role. That's it. If you need more data, ask after conversion. The conversion funnel isn't the place to run a census. We tested a 7-field form vs. a 3-field form for the same lead magnet. The 3-field version converted 2.4x higher.
Mobile conversion rate optimization matters even more here: thumb fatigue is real. Keep fields minimal on all devices.
5. Show price before signup
Hiding pricing breeds distrust. Your visitor wants to know cost before they give you their email. Show it. If you offer custom pricing, say so on the pricing page. Transparency removes a layer of friction and self-selects for prospects who fit your range.
6. Add social proof above the fold
One number works better than vague claims. "Trusted by 200+ startups" beats "Industry leaders choose us." Logos of known companies beat generic testimonials. A fintech startup added customer logos above their fold CTA. Conversion rate went from 3.2% to 4.7%.
7. Test your form labels and placeholders
Placeholder text is not a label. Use labels. In mobile view, placeholders disappear once you start typing, leaving users confused about what field they're in. A 15-minute UI fix, but critical for form completion rates.
8. Show the next step after clicking CTA
Visitor clicks "Get started." Next page says "Thanks! We'll email you." That's dead air. They don't know if anything happened. Add a clear next step: "Check your inbox" or "Your demo is scheduled for Tuesday at 2pm." Reduce anxiety. One email platform went from 22% of demo bookers actually attending to 71% by clarifying the next step.
9. Tighten your value prop into one sentence
Your homepage shouldn't make visitors work to understand what you do. One sentence, specific to your audience. "Performance marketing software for D2C brands" beats "Omnichannel marketing platform." Clarity converts. A creator economy tool tested their headline against a cleaner version: conversion rate jumped 19%.
10. Remove exit-intent popups (or make them actually valuable)
Exit popups feel desperate and trigger immediately on mouse-out. They work temporarily, then tank trust. If you use one, delay it by 8+ seconds and make the offer genuinely different from what's already on the page. Better: skip it and optimize the page itself.
11. Optimize for mobile first
60% of B2B traffic is now mobile, and your desktop site probably doesn't convert on small screens. Stack elements vertically. Expand touch targets to 44x44 pixels minimum. Test form entry on an actual phone. We audited a CRM site with a 4% desktop conversion rate but 0.8% mobile. Mobile optimization alone doubled overall conversions.
12. Use specific, benefit-driven microcopy
Button text matters. "Submit" is weak. "See your ROI in 5 minutes" is strong. Microcopy on forms should tell the user why they're filling it out. On CTAs, lead with the benefit. "Get instant pricing" converts higher than "Click here."
13. Include a FAQ section above the fold
Objections kill conversions. Don't wait for email support tickets. Anticipate the questions your prospect is asking: "How long does setup take?" "Can we integrate with Salesforce?" "What's your refund policy?" A workflow automation platform added a 3-question FAQ to their pricing page. It dropped support ticket volume 34% and lifted conversions 11%.
14. Use a sticky header CTA on scroll
Your visitor scrolls down the page. Your main CTA is at the top. Add a secondary CTA (smaller, less aggressive) to the sticky header. They stay engaged without feeling pushed. One B2B platform added a sticky "Chat with sales" button. Conversion rate increased 7% with near-zero abandonment spike.
The conversion rate optimization mindset
CRO isn't a project. It's a practice. Pick one or two items from this checklist, test them, measure, repeat. A 5% conversion rate increase means 5% more revenue with the same marketing spend. Most sites leave 40%+ conversion upside on the table by ignoring these basics.
The strongest conversion funnels aren't about tricks. They're about removing obstacles, answering objections, and respecting your visitor's time. At Heptism, we treat CRO as part of every site we build. If your website is leaking qualified leads, start here.
